This day was the birth of 2-5. Lance’s new outlook on life: to live life in a higher “gear”. You’ll have to ask him to explain it better to you.
So from Cape Lookout we ended up in Pacific City…not more than 18 miles away. Call us lazy but that was a KILLER ride, not like cool killer, but painful killer. That hill just out of the park was insane, an almost 1000-foot climb and 3 miles long! for us untrained bikers was a challenge, it took us forever but the view was gooooorgeous: rain forest, fog, rocks, mossed trees, fresh air, birds, vines, lovely! felt like a different country, maybe somewhere in South American in the Amazon.
We finally got to the top of the hill, I thought it would never end. It felt so good to know it was over. After that hill, we went over some more little ones, I wasn’t sure where it was gonna end. The fun thing about big hills is that one…they don’t last forever and two, the downhill part, although really scary (for me at least) it is a lot of fun. I’m always paranoid of hitting a rock or sliding on gravel and falling onto traffic…total nightmare. So after the rain forest, we passed by some more sand dunes and later entered Pacific City. You come into the city and see a few shops, restaurants and the beach to your right. After all that climbing, we were pretty hungry so we had some delicious lunch at the Pelican Pub & Brewery where Lance asked our waitress Laura D to quit and join us on our adventure but…I guess she needs to win the lottery first. Apparently money’s more important. She has no idea.
The view was great, sitting outside by the beach. We saw some people set up for a wedding and a bunch of other people with their dogs, I guess this is the place to be and bring your dog outside to have a beer by the beach. Two miles later, we found a campground, small….SMALL campground and my least favorite so far and stayed there that night. No one else was there. The Park Host was from Sacramento! Coincidence? I think not…BECAUSE she gave us a discount :) No showers though, just toilets and picnic tables. Nevertheless, we had some $3.00 wine, the crappiest wine we’ve ever had and eventually went to bed.
We left in the morn around 10am to get to Lincoln City before the rain poured down. They called for rain all day today, so we’re staying at a Motel 6 to escape it but we’re still waiting for it. Weather here is tricky, it may change within the next 30 minutes from cloudy to showers. The ride here (Lincoln City) was pretty too, a 22 mile ride, wasn’t horrible. After Pacific City we passed through tons of farms and mountains, looked beautiful, again reminded me of WV. The roads were good too, pretty good shoulders. We did about a 2 mile climb, elevation 752 feet. It was a little steep too, I was pretty frustrated but we finally got to the top. We rolled into the city and Lance was no where to be found. He was way ahead of us. We planned to stay at the first KOA we saw so we wouldn’t get soaked later on.
While waiting for Lance to come back and try to figure out what to do, we met up with Rick again, the biker we met in Cape Lookout (one of them). He was already going back home and had finished his 4-day trip. He told us we could stay at a motel nearby in the city, etc and said “you guys are not making very good time”. “We’re not trying to” I said, “we have no time to make”. We’re really taking our time to sight see and hang out, it’s beautiful out here, it’s our first time I just don’t wanna fly past all these awesome places.
We finally decided to go into the city and get a hotel room in Motel 6, so on our way down this other hill, we see Lance coming back. We all went to the nearby plaza and did some laundry there before getting to the motel. We met a lady and her son and talked to them for a while, we also had a bite to eat at the cafe next door.
So right now, we’re enjoying the (overdue) hot showers, some nice rest and finally being able to write at the public library. Lance stayed in the hotel attached to the TV while Ryan and I walked to the library, a long 2 miles (seemed really long) after napping at the hotel and watching re-runs of America’s Next Top Model, apparently one of Lance’s favorites. Pretty fummy (dumb and funny) show.
Let me just say. Oregon…is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!!!! Some parts really remind me of West Virginia, the mountains, the fog, the water, the hills. It’s gorgeous, but they say they only get 60 something days of sunshine…that’s terrible, like a curse!!!! Maybe that’s what you gotta get to live in beauty…rain, rain, rain. Anyway so that night, we met up with Lance after coming back from the library and went to dinner at a little Mexican restaurant close to the hotel. Went back to the hotel and crashed.
At this point I’m really tired still. I feel like even when we get an extra day (which we haven’t lately) of rest, it’s not much rest. I need mooooooore! My legs are so sore, they feel really strong though and I know I can do much more than when we started. My back has been ok, surprisingly, it gets stiff from time to time, but mostly is my legs and sometimes my arms, my wrists hurt too when I ride and it gets really annoying when they go numb. That doesn’t really go away until we stop ridding for the day. Terribly uncomfortable.
So, what’s next? Beverly Beach State Park!
Oh, thank you again for your prayers and wishes, and thoughts and keep doing that cause we need it. These hills ain’t easy. We love you…stay tuned for more.
