- Sunset by the River
Unfortunately fortunately, we weren’t able to leave for our honeymoon right after the wedding. Midterms took over our schedule but it was good–a few weeks gave us time to study, relax, and figure out what we wanted to do.
We stayed in Ryan’s aunt’s mother-in-law’s cabin, very cozy, super cute. She was so kind to let us stay there. It was so fun! At first I was a little paranoid of all the spiders, not that I’m scared of them, just a little terrified of them crawling on me. It didn’t matter how much time we spent looking for ‘em, they were there and they were not leaving. A curious one crawled up my leg and bit me while watching a movie, not a big deal, not much worse than a mosquito bite. I don’t feel comfortable sharing a space with them though.
When we got there, Ryan’s parents surprised us. They left us some wine and food, champagne, gift certificates, popcorn, fruit…how sweet! We even got mind on our pillows :) What a nice start to our honeymoon! Thank you guys!!!!!!! That really helped us, especially cause we both needed to do homework, so off to the library we had to go and then to the coffee shop after our hour was up. What would we do without the Internet?
So other than spiders, we spent a lot of time watching movies, one of our most favorite things to do. We must have checked out like 20 movies from the library. We also cooked, went hiking to Big Trees, wine tasting, beer tasting, went out to eat, walked around town, went fishing, it was a nice break indeed. And I even caught my first fish! We’d gone fishing before in WV but nothing. This time….*ahem* 3!!! Awesomeness I must say. Ryan caught 4 or 5, it was a beautiful day, started in the afternoon and left after the sunset OH MY, it was gorgeous!
Most of the days were cold, I didn’t anticipate it to be that cold but thankfully we were both prepared. The nicest day was the fishing day, about 65 degrees…I said TANK TOP WEATHER! yessssssssss.
BIG TREES – Couldn’t believe my eyes. I had seen really big trees when I went to Yosemite many years ago but man, these trees are unbelievably large. The saddest thing is that people chopped a few down, back in the early 1900s I think, I don’t know maybe even 1800s. I guess they wanted to prove to people the trees actually existed so they cut them down. Guess for what? so they could stand on its trunk. What idiots. Another was stripped naked, they took the bark and reconstructed the tree at a big tree museum or something…ugh! Now all you see is the trees, naked, burned, fallen, broken, and what did they accomplish? Zilch. It’s sad how we use and abuse nature to gain pride or whatever, when really in the end we gain nothing, on the other hand, we lose, we’re losing so many precious things around us. I’m embarrassed for them. Thankfully, the law prohibits any abuse and the trees are now protected.
Wine Tasting at Ironstone
IRONSTONE – Although our favorite wine was Milliare‘s wine (and our time talking to the ladies behind the counter was fantastic too), we enjoyed Ironstone for a different reason. The wine? bleh! but the place is crazy beautiful. It’s huuuuge, they have tons of land which has been very well designed. They have a lake, a nature walk, an amphitheater, a museum, restaurant, I mean the place is BIG. We enjoyed the nature trail, little streams, bridges, eventually leading you to the lake by this field. They keep the place up nicely. It would be a magical place for a wedding perhaps :) If only their wine was as good. Nonetheless, it’s a place to visit. Oh yeah, the museum holds the largest crystallized piece of gold in the world!!! We also saw some old photographs, crystals, and newspapers from 1800s, one was from 1865, when Abraham Lincoln was shot. Crayzeh.
It was a lovely week, we really enjoyed the area and it reminded us a lot of West Virginia, which we both miss greatly. The quiet, peaceful, secluded, mountains used to bring us fresh air, open skies, rivers, and the reminder of time passing with each season. I miss you WV. Not the base, just the area, let me clarify THAT! ;)
So, we’re back now–organizing our schedules so we have a good healthy routine. Wedding crazyness is officially over. Thank goodness.
