After cleaning the disastrous patio we have after winter, I really wanted to make it soothing, attractive, more private and mostly, take advantage of it. We have a very teeny eety beety patio, but big enough to put a small table and chairs just for us both. We also have a small deck that takes about a 3rd of the area, and on it we have a nice hot tub we have yet to use. The persimmon tree gives us most of the shade, although I just realized that we don’t get a whole lot of sun during the day on that side of the house regardless.
I’ve been wanting to plant food for a few years now and I guess I had a better chance before than I do now. I’ve had bigger yards and sunnier ones too, where I’m sure I could have grown some real nice veggies & fruits. But now that I actually have the time, I decided to give it a try anyway. So I bought what I needed and I planted some flowers right out of pots and some seeds I’ve saved up, I bought a few more too. This Saturday will be two weeks and they’re getting there, but some have yet to birth :( After some research, I concluded that I won’t be able to grow a whole lot back there, unless I plant stuff that needs “full” and partial shade. The amount of sun we get is not enough (I’m still wondering) for what I wanna grow but I’m gonna try either way.
We have some nice rose bushes which I trimmed a few months ago. Buds are here and we already had one of them bloom and fall apart even. They’re very beautiful. The persimmon tree has been a lovely sight. We’ve watched it go from looking like it would never again bloom, to having tiny buds and now the leaves are really bright green getting bigger with each week. In the mornings, I look out our bedroom window and I can see the top of the tree, the branches almost touch our window so I can see the buds and leaves very closely. We’ve had some squirrels too and birds love to hang out.
I’ve really enjoyed seeing the changing and growing. I have never really watched something so closely but have always enjoyed the changing seasons in West Virginia, so dramatic, each so beautiful.
Back to the seeds…I planted some Sunflowers, Zinnias, Bells of Ireland, Italian Parsley, Sweet Basil, Cleome, and some mums. So far, we only have the sunflowers, parsley, basil, and zinnias coming up. After some fun reading, I found some really cool organic gardening and square-foot gardening (easy solutions for urban areas or small homes/yards/patios or those that don’t have any of those) sites, very inspiring. Here are some of my favorites in case you wanna try too ;)
The Garden Girl (She’s awesome!)
We also finally got our Worm Factory going. I’m SO excited. Believe it or not, it’s getting easier to uncover the top and actually take a look at the worms. It’s gonna take me some time, but I’ll get there. For now, it’s Ryan’s job to lift and move stuff around. I’ll collect the food scraps and take care of the compost afterward.
First time I heard about the Worm Factory was after reading Dave’s blog 365 days of trash. It’s pretty awesome and it inspired me to doing all these little things that save me money and time and make little bits of difference here and there. Anyway, I’ll vastly blog about that later, cause I’m sure I’ll have lots to say.
So I leave you with some of my seedlings :)

It’s great you’re looking at the potential enjoyment of your itty bitty patio instead of seeing it as nothing or not big enough. Your pics of the seedlings are so cute. You need to post the full grown product. That’ll be fun to see. And, worms…..are so cute.
