I haven’t written in a while cause I’ve just had too much to do and when I am not doing homework, I’m doing something around the house. I also haven’t really thought about what to write, so it just hasn’t been on my mind. Just put together a small “portfolio” for my sketching class, which was part of my midterm grade. And since we’re in Spring Break now (yaaay!), I have a few things I can show we’ve been working on in each class. So here’s a visual of what I’ve been up to in school and the progress of my classes. They are not spectacular, but I’m happy that I’ve learned as much so far. It’s been really fun actually.
I am currently taking 3 classes and I could write a whole lot about each but it would be way too long of a post, (it already is)…so, with that…
SKETCHING CLASS – Very basic sketching, we’re not supposed to go crazy on detail, he actually told me I was spending too much time in my drawings as you’ll see how in the first pages. I had to just learn to not “try too hard” which is a bad habit of mine. Usually, I end up with a painful wrist and shoulders. We had models in class, which was interesting, a male and female nude and then we did male and female with clothes the following week, which was much more enjoyable ;) The slideshow starts on week 1 and goes til week 7. Didn’t include every week, just a few. Name of the lesson is at the bottom of slideshow.
DIGITAL TOOLS CLASS – Where you learn to use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign to create and modify any graphics (vector art), create layouts such as magazine pages, books, etc, and digital photo editing. Right now, we’ve done InDesign which I LOVE, and we’re still working with Illustrator which is pretty much amazing, except that I’m way over my head, it’s extremely overwhelming for me because the possibilities are endless. So often times, I don’t even know where to start. Photoshop we will cover later, I can’t wait. I’m ready to learn some new tricks. I’m really enjoying this class, there’s so much freedom for creativity and originality.
TOOLS & COMPING TECHNIQUES – Extremely tedious but fun. We’re working on re-designing a label for either an olive 0il bottle or a balsamic vinegar bottle, I picked the vinegar from Newman’s Own Organics. We started sketching ideas (icons) and now we’re getting ready to print our labels. That’s just one project. In the future, we’ll be designing take out boxes with matching chopsticks (usually used for Chinese food), a gift bag with a die-cut window, a brochure cover, an accordion fold brochure, a shopping bag, and throughout all these, we’ll learn how to design a logo, emboss, die-cut, and a bunch of other techniques used in graphic design. In the slideshow, you’ll see part of the process, from the original bottle to me picking the best icons and finally narrowing it down to 4 labels, each with a different concept (barrels, grapes, source, and organic). In the end, I’ll be choosing one concept label and having it printed so I can glue it to the actual bottle. You’ll see the refined narrowed-down-to-8-sketches and then the best 4 concepts individually (barrel, grape dripping vinegar (grapes concept), grapes with heart (organic concept), and building (source concept). I’ll post that at the end of the semester along with the rest of the projects :)
