diptych

E. Martène et U. Durand, Voyage littéraire de deux religieux bénédictins de la Congrégation de Saint Maur, Paris, 1717.

Merriam-Webster defines diptych as: a picture or series of pictures (as an altarpiece) painted or carved on two hinged tablets, or: a work made up of two matching parts.

Pronunciation: \ˈdip-(ˌ)tik\
Etymology: Late Latin diptycha, plural, from Greek, from neuter plural of diptychos folded in two, from di- + ptychē fold
Date: 1622

In photography, a diptych is a pair of photos that work better together than separately. (WikiAnswers)

If you type “diptych photography” into a search engine, you’ll see beautiful examples. It could tell a story, the pictures can compliment one another, they can contrast, it can be the same picture, it could be part of the same picture, it can be a different picture. But they must be the same size and from what I’ve seen, the same colors/tones, etc.

John Bernhard has some really nice black and white photographic diptychs.

Our assignment was to make a diptych using the “Loneliness” assignment photo plus a new one. So, here’s mine, and I got an A! That was our midterm! say yay!
