Food Photography

Last week’s assignment for my photography class, was to emulate a professional photographer and submit 3 photos. I don’t know why but I chose one of the most difficult subjects: food. Maybe I was hungry?

Amy Herold is a commercial photographer (if that’s a term) but she photographs food. I chose her because I loved her clean, crisp photos and compositions. Her colors, and textures as well. So I chose three photos to emulate. In the end, I got an A but the champagne bottle was the weakest one because of the label. I had a hard time accepting that cause I was not going to buy another bottle! what if I would have gotten the same label?! His comment was, that now the focus was on the label rather than the fancy bottle of champagne/brand. Okay, okay…he has a point.

This was really difficult. I have so much more respect for food photographers. The amount of detail is essential. The lighting and every reflection, every angle. It’s great, but it’s really not easy at all. The amount of preparation, really reflects on Amy’s work. The other thing that makes it a lot more difficult is our restricted use of Photoshop. The point is to use only the tools that you would normally find in an analog darkroom, so it’s been quite a challenge but it’s been a lot of fun learning to not rely on Photoshop for a good picture.

So here you go: You be the judge.

UPDATE: I got an A minus!!!
