Yesterday’s assignment was to re-create a CD album cover of anyone we wanted to. This was soooo hard! I kept thinking I wanted to do something really simple, but in the end I complicated myself was usual.

I chose Ojos de Brujo. A wonderfully deliciously talented Spanish group that has a very interesting and eclectic sounds. Influenced by hip hop, flamenco, middle eastern, reggae, and electronic among others, this group always makes me feel a specific something within me. I don’t know how to describe it, but what my mind thinks of when I hear their music is incredibly complex (or complicated?). Sometimes I wanna scream. I love their sounds, their texture, their colors, so I wanted to reflect that in the pictures.

Anyway. I decided to have fun with it and dress up the part. The assignment was to make 8 pages and pick a theme to conceptualize; either the title of the album, or lyrics, name of the group, etc. The two best photos usually called “hero” shots, had to be the front and back of the album, and then the rest inside. We also had to print it out and put it together. So, I dressed up and put a mask of make up on, an put all my belly dancing jewelry on, yada yada yada. I ended up taking over 200 pictures, my battery died, I had to recharge and keep going. I used a red filter directly on my camera to give it a darker, mysterious, and distorted effect. I wanted blur, big highlights, very dark spots and good close ups of my eyes because…

The album is called “Techarí” which means “Free” in Caló, the Spanish gypsies’ language. Ojos de Brujo means “Eyes of the Sorcerer”, that’s why I wanted a dark and mysterious feel, and a good close up of my darkened eyes.

I barely made the deadline for submission. I hope it doesn’t affect my grade. It’s extremely hard to take pictures of yourself, I’m not talking about face shots, here. Everyone’s an expert at that, these days. GRADE: A!!! I was really nervous about it, and he gave me some tips on how to improve certain shots. I’m so relieved.
