Found this awesome opportunity to be part of a big art project. The Sketchbook Project 2011! I’m not sure when this project started but I think the first one was either 2009 or 2010. What’s it all about? You sign up, they send you a moleskine sketchbook like the one below and you get to do whatever you want with it. I mean, either draw, paint, decorate, do cartoons, tell a story, posts pictures, write poems, music, I mean, the possibilities are endless. You pick a theme and you go with that theme, but you’re not restricted to it. As long as you keep the book within the same dimensions and it can open and close to the original dimensions, it’s good to go.
What happens after? You submit your sketchbook by January 15th, 2011 and after they collect all the sketchbooks from people that participated, they will tour the country! So you get to be part of a huge exhibit in museum and galleries and hundreds of people can see your doodles. After the tour, all the sketchbooks will become part of the Brooklyn Art Library, permanently. The cool part about it, is that one: they will scan them eventually so later you’ll be able to see hundreds of them online. Two: each sketchbook gets a barcode, so you know who (surely not specifically, I think), when, and where (tour dates and toured cities) checks out your sketchbook, how many times, etc. I don’t believe these actually leave the library though, not sure about that one. Is that cool or what? Check out more details of what happens: The Sketchbook Project – Features
I signed up Ryan and I and we’re pretty pumped about it. Apparently he told me about it a while ago and I forgot (or wasn’t listening). Then I came across it somehow and got super excited. You can imagine his reaction when I told him jumping up and down. *sighs* There went my surprise.
We got ours in the mail! Yaaaaaaaay! So, off we go sketching. OH! My theme is: “Figuring You Out”. Not sure what I’m gonna do with that, I forgot what I had in mind when I ordered it. Ryan’s theme is: “Storybook”. Well, so…what are YOU waiting for? Be part of it! It’s only $25! There’s no age limit, so you can do this with your kids (as many mothers have done), husband, grandparents, dog, cat, turtle, aunt, cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors…it’s a way to bring people together to share art with the rest of he world, no matter how good or bad, silly, funny, stupid, in depth, or simple it is. It’s about CREATING something. Sure, you can just buy a sketchbook and do it at home and no one will see it….blah blah blah. But this is just SO MUCH BETTER.

This is a great adventure. Looking forward to all you two will create.
The theme you and Ryan got are no longer there, what they do is that when a theme fills up they take it away and add another. Currently there’s “A day in the life” . I think I want to do “A day in the life of a teacher. Input, to cheesy? Other fun ones they currently have, that sound appealing and do-able to me are…”I’m sorry I forgot you”, It must be…”, “Trading forever” and “Help!” SOOOOO what do you think
P! I think I like your idea of “a day in the life of a teacher”….you can write and doodle some of your students and write those silly (and wonderful) things they say. That’d be good!!! I also like “I’m sorry I forgot you” and “Help!” I don’t know what I would do with “Trading Forever”. I think I would also choose: “I will be fun, I swear” and “It must be”. Sooooo, what’s it gonna be?
ok so i thought and thought before I picked.
I liked I’m sorry I forgot you cause it could be about people, dirty laundry, dishes…things or people you’ve forgotten about. But I thought maybe I wouldn’t be able to finish it in time.
Then I thought “It must be…” could be fun, where I could draw a zoomed in version of something on one side of the page and then on the back a regular view of the object. For example one one side it would be two people sitting on a lawn chair and when you flipped the page, it would be a zoomed out picture of two people sitting on a lawn chair on a cruise deck. Do I make sense? But my artistic skills are not that great for such detailed work.
And so I went with “A day in the life of…”
So there’s no rules on the page saying what needs to be inside the sketchbook…drawings, photogrpahs, writings? Anything goes?
YAY!!! YOU GOT ONE!!!! And yeah! Anything goes, and you don’t have to stick to that theme specifically, so you can start off with it but you can have random stuff in there too. ANYTHING GOES! You’re free to do with it as you please :) That’s my favorite part of the whole thing. This is what the RULES say:
